Smart Kids Productions ~ Nanuq

Nanuq is a 31 page full color book that is from Smart Kid Publications.  The book retails for $12.99, but is available on their website for $10.39, and it comes with a Live Animal DVD full of information for the kids about Polar Bears in the wild.  You also get a passcode to register your book and play online games.

These products are geared toward children ages 4-8.  Both my 3 year old and 8 year old enjoyed the book and the DVD.  The video has provided them with a great amount of trivia about Polar bears, and they have shared these facts with other family over the Thanksgiving Holiday.  They were little trivia kings....

The website was less interesting for the boys.  They didn't seem to have an easy time navigating the games, nor were they allowed to access many of the items, because they needed to acquire 4000 points to purchase items that allowed them to even participate in several of the activities in the habitat.  My 8 year old found it frustrating that it took so long to earn points.

Another drawback is that you only have access to the website for 14 days after you register,  you need to purchase additional memberships to extend the access to the website.  You can purchase these memberships for 1 month, 6 months, or one year.  While this would not be an option for my family, it was fun to play on the website for a few days.  I could see the book along with a website membership as a nice gift for grandparents looking to give a gift of learning for Christmas.

All things considered, I feel that with the cost of the book, and the included video, make this product a worthwhile purchase for a young child that is learning about animals, and the world around them.
