Smart Kids Productions ~ Nanuq

Photobucket

Nanuq is a 31 page full color book that is from Smart Kid Publications.  The book retails for $12.99, but is available on their website for $10.39, and it comes with a Live Animal DVD full of information for the kids about Polar Bears in the wild.  You also get a passcode to register your book and play online games.

These products are geared toward children ages 4-8.  Both my 3 year old and 8 year old enjoyed the book and the DVD.  The video has provided them with a great amount of trivia about Polar bears, and they have shared these facts with other family over the Thanksgiving Holiday.  They were little trivia kings....

The website was less interesting for the boys.  They didn't seem to have an easy time navigating the games, nor were they allowed to access many of the items, because they needed to acquire 4000 points to purchase items that allowed them to even participate in several of the activities in the habitat.  My 8 year old found it frustrating that it took so long to earn points.

Another drawback is that you only have access to the website for 14 days after you register,  you need to purchase additional memberships to extend the access to the website.  You can purchase these memberships for 1 month, 6 months, or one year.  While this would not be an option for my family, it was fun to play on the website for a few days.  I could see the book along with a website membership as a nice gift for grandparents looking to give a gift of learning for Christmas.

All things considered, I feel that with the cost of the book, and the included video, make this product a worthwhile purchase for a young child that is learning about animals, and the world around them.

Head on over to their website and take a look around that the books and the DVD preview video.  You can find them at My Animal Family dot com.

Coin Pouch ~ Corps of Re-Discovery ~ Product Review

This is an adorable product!

As a member of the TOS Homeschool Review Crew, I received a Coin Pouch Kit from Corps of Re-Discovery to review.

We had fun putting it together.  The directions were clear and easy to understand.  It was not hard to sew.

The Coin Pouch Kit sells for $4.99 from their website.  It is one of the many crafts and projects they provide.  When we were sewing together our Coin Pouch, we had a chance to discuss what materials you would need if you would have to make this piece back in the days of westward expansion. He have been listening to the Little House series and Hunter said that if he were Pa, he would maybe use prairie grass to sew his together.  He enjoyed the craft and had lots of ideas to share about if and when he was ever on the wild frontier.
Stop by Corps of Re-Discovery to see what you may be able to incorporate into your studies about American Indians, PioneersThe Colonial period, and Frontiersmen.  They also have kits to enhance the hands on learning of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Look for them on their facebook fan page. Make sure you "like" them,  it is where they will be offering special coupons and discounts!

Corps of Re-Discovery is a home-based family business, and all of their products are manufactured by their employees here in the United States.  Click on any of the links above to access their website directly or you can write to them at:

My fellow crew members reviewed other products by this company. Don't forget to stop by the Homeschool Review blog page to see what they have to say.

It was easy to sew even with a cast!

Field Trip to the Oregon Coast

We love to camp.  We haven't camped in a few years, actually since 2005 I think.  We have a favorite spot on the Oregon Coast where we go, about 25 miles north of Coos Bay/ North Bend, OR.

Big Daddy grew up there, so it is fun to hear the stories of what it was like when he lived there.  The beauty that is the Oregon Coast can not be experienced through description, one must go, see, smell, experience it in person.

We explored the tide pools at Sunset Beach, looking at all the fish that were trapped till the next tide.  We found tons of Hermit Crabs, and thousands of sea anemones.

At the end of the bay out near the breakwater, we came across this guy, nestled in the rocks.  Nearly gave the ones who were up ahead a heart attack when he sat up. He was tolerant of our being there and let me snap quite a few pictures.  We tried to see if he was hurt, but we couldn't tell.  Hope he made it out on the next tide.

We went to Bandon, OR.  Walked along the wharf, had fish and chips that are really a must do if you are ever there.

We learned the history of the area, and about is ecosystem.

we went to the docks where men were crabbing, and there were about 4 harbor seals that were swimming around raiding the crab pots from below, and waiting for the men to throw back the ones that were too small to keep.

Our campground, at Umpqua Lighthouse is amazing.  We have stayed there every time we go.
